Stefanie Tuurna

Stefanie Tuurna on viime aikoina tullut tunnetuksi esikoiskirjailijana. Hänen nuortenromaaninsa "Maamaa" voitti vuonna 2026 Lastenkirjainstituutin myöntämän Punni-kirjallisuuspalkinnon. Teos oli myös vuonna 2025 Lasten- ja nuortenkirjallisuuden Finlandia-ehdokkaana. Tuurna valmistui diplomipianistiksi Sibelius-Akatemialta vuonna 2016 ja on työskennellyt sen jälkeen konserttipianistina, säveltäjänä ja pianonsoiton, musiikinteorian, improvisaation, sävellyksen ja kamarimusiikin opettajana. Hänen laajamittaisimpia sävellyksiään ovat laulusarja "Edda!" (2023) sekä vankilateemainen kamariooppera "The Box" (2021). Tuurnan erityisala on improvisaatio, jota hän on tutkinut mm. opinnäytteessään ja opiskellut mm. David Dolanin ja Robert Levinen mestarikursseilla. Tuurna hyödyntää improvisaatiota työssään SKO:n Balettioppilaitoksen säestäjänä sekä pedagogiikassaan. Hän on järjestänyt improvisaatiokonsertteja sekä luennoinut aiheesta mm. SibA:lla. Syksyllä 2018 ilmestyi Tuurnan tekemä oppikirja "Vapaat kädet - pianonsoiton ja improvisoinnin opas".

Stefanie Tuurna (born 1988) is a Finnish YA author, pianist, composer and music teacher.


Tuurna has recently become known as a debut author. Her YA novel “Maamaa” won the Punni Literature Prize awarded by the Finnish Institute for Children’s Literature in 2026. The work was also a nominee for the Finlandia Prize in Children’s and Young Adult Literature in 2025.  The Swedish translation of the work was published in autumn 2025 by Schildts & Söderströms, translated by Kaj Korkea-aho.


Currently she is working as a teacher of improvisation, piano, music theory and chamber music. She is employed at the Musik- och kulturskolan Sandels and at the Helsingfors Arbis, and also as a ballet accompanist at the Finnish National Ballet. She performs regularly as a pianist and organizes concerts and performances for her compositions.


Tuurna is a sought-after expert in the field of musical improvisation. She teaches the subject to students ranging from young children to adults, from beginners to professionals. The participants in her courses typically consist of different instrumentalists with various stylistic backgrounds. Her courses vary in length from workshops to week-long summer courses and year-long courses. On the topic of improvisation, Tuurna has lectured at the Sibelius Academy and coached teachers from various music institutes in Finland.


Tuurna holds a Master of Music from the Sibelius Academy, where she studied classical piano with Margit Rahkonen and composition with Juhani Nuorvala. She has also attended master classes with Erik T. Tawaststjerna, Hui-Ying Liu-Tawaststjerna, Joonas Pohjonen, Matti Raekallio, Teppo Koivisto and Arto Satukangas. She is specialized in techniques of classical improvisation, which she has studied in master classes with David Dolan, Robert Levine, Erja Joukamo-Ampuja and Anto Pett. Her studies included pedagogical studies for a higher education degree in the arts (60 cr), and she wrote her thesis on the use of improvisation in adult piano pedagogy.
